A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you become starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
